Your organisation's purpose:

Southeastern have been running the train service between London, Kent and parts of East Sussex since 2006 and operates one of the busiest rail networks in the country, including the UK's only domestic high speed service with our Javelin trains.

Southeastern support the communities we serve, working with the public and private sector in collaborative partnerships to actively promote the advantages of travelling by rail and encourage people to travel in a greener and more sustainable way.

We aim to encourage people out of their cars and onto trains which has a positive effect on the local environment.

What is your impact initiative?

Southeastern believe taking the train is one of the easiest things people can do to help lower their CO2 emissions and we are constantly seeking ways to help make our business even more sustainable. One of our latest innovations is fitting new technology onto our high speed trains to help regenerate energy.

The impact your initiative has had:

This technology enables our high speed trains to regenerate energy as they brake, which in turn helps reduce the energy the trains need between Ashford and St Pancras by 10%.

Have you observed any direct benefits to your business or organisation as a result of the initiative?

People are increasingly looking for ways to be more sustainable when they travel.  According to research by Trainline conducted by Censuswide of 1,004 UK respondents who travel for business, 72% said in 2023 they would like to travel more by lower carbon modes of transport such as rail, wherever possible.

Our new initiative helps highlight the benefits of train travel, we plan to communicate this to our customers and continue to work with the rail industry to promote the benefits of train travel over the car.

Have you observed any benefits to your visitors as a result of the initiative?

By travelling across Kent by train instead of driving, our customers can feel safe in the knowledge that they are helping to cut their C02 emissions. They can use our carbon calculator on our website to check just how much more sustainable their train journey is over the car.

What category/categories does your initiative fall under?
